Very appropriately, I can now share the work in progress images of Sheila Dunscombe's patchwork shoes which very effectively used this technique. This piece and the rest will be <a href="http://www.nationalneedleworkarchive.org.uk/" target="_blank">on show to the public again from Wednesday 19 September to Friday 26 October 2012 at the National Needlework Archive in Newbury.</a><br />

It is a box of Victorian Dolls Clothes, including dresses, a corset and shoes. This was the most popular inspiration from the Handling Collection as it inspired Sheila, Sandy Snowden and Chris Day. Digital negatives were made of a family group photo and Sheila's photo of the coverlet, here placed on treated fabric for making a cyanotype/'sun-print'.<br />

To highlight Alice and Sheila's grandfather she added a cut-out from what she originally thought was a poor print, but which is in fact exposed much better for the image. <br />
<br />
Sheila notes that: "Incidentally - the reason I thought the 'cutout' print poor was because its left-hand third was very pale, due to an uneven treatment of the fabric. So I used the 'good' bit! A similar but lesser fault can actually be seen down left side of the dark/doily print used (later disguised with long fabric strip of bow). I do think it's strange how the two left figures only show up clearly in flash photos, not 'in the flesh'!"</div>

The pattern for the 3-dimensional part of the design was based on Sheila's daughters first shoe. I love the way the connections in this piece go through five generations of her family from Sheila's Great Grandmother down to her daughter. It was made using patchwork cyanotype, polyester sateen-backed 'suede', and knitted copper-wire tubing.</div>

The Academy has a special focus of Museum Learning and has links with Slough Museum which meant they were very excited to be able to show some of the Whatever floats your boat ... work in their gallery space. The Academy also has students that are studying textile art and Suzie Parr said that these students will be particularly interested to see the work of our artists.<br />
<br />
Then we will be working towards a bigger and better show of work at the National Needlework Archive in September. We are keen to encourage people who haven't already participated to think about creating something for the exhibition, and encourage those who have to develop their work in some way and create companion pieces that further explore the inspirations or techniques used already.Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15261957979103264887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-91728816049265461622012-01-27T08:58:00.000-08:002012-01-27T08:58:59.852-08:00Inspire Mark extended!With the good news that the exhibition will be touring to the National Needlework Archive in Newbury in the autumn, I'm pleased to say that our 'Inspire Mark' award has been extended to the end of 2012. So pat yourselves on the back - we are well and truly part of the Cultural Olympiad of 2012.<br />
The project will also continue to inspire young people because a selection of work will be going to Langley Academy for use as inspiration for art and art textiles students.Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15261957979103264887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-64951478729086140602011-12-01T04:38:00.000-08:002011-12-01T04:38:55.538-08:00Quick photos of the work on view in Bracknell<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNz_oLnL79T0SwMkWD9eCtTQdvcTazWrU6z-VJ242BHjLn850IpNyhTwS0n2OURBvLyjsVmB3lGfv4hTsAZcWqVVqhq0_u3Zr0ooBz7uRC2yL4Zp_R2beQBWYeTuBkTbe4NMZ2aiA5WywQ/s1600/hanging+it8sm.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNz_oLnL79T0SwMkWD9eCtTQdvcTazWrU6z-VJ242BHjLn850IpNyhTwS0n2OURBvLyjsVmB3lGfv4hTsAZcWqVVqhq0_u3Zr0ooBz7uRC2yL4Zp_R2beQBWYeTuBkTbe4NMZ2aiA5WywQ/s320/hanging+it8sm.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

Because most of the time the exhibition will be 'view through window only' we tried to put small things in the window so they had as much chance to be seen as the larger wall pieces. Already whilst hanging it we had people asking when it would open, and stopping to look closely at the small works.Sandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04978514536651961190noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-23093025546140976922011-11-27T09:01:00.000-08:002011-11-27T09:09:36.467-08:00We are now showing at Gallery@49, Bracknell<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwOQu7UBEuHLeYmgYM4W8RrbL7WMpBDrMlnILWNQXosvuOKfMskrxCfHl2VxwBiKcsREbd2jPz0F02xdcsTKRF878LNhmiqvTAThYQk2S3JYDpa3ENgUclUMo8AQ-c3JytWqvjdBRTtKE/s1600/Gallery49EmailAnnouncement-TVCT.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hda="true" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwOQu7UBEuHLeYmgYM4W8RrbL7WMpBDrMlnILWNQXosvuOKfMskrxCfHl2VxwBiKcsREbd2jPz0F02xdcsTKRF878LNhmiqvTAThYQk2S3JYDpa3ENgUclUMo8AQ-c3JytWqvjdBRTtKE/s400/Gallery49EmailAnnouncement-TVCT.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>See a selection of pieces at the recently opened Gallery@49, on the corner of Crossway and Broadway in Bracknell town centre. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw1u1p6ijkhzWVlcHL1yUMMWu_uNpOj5tYFdTBAyp68j93xl4abFYYykCX_LvHheRPcXdKJ_opfIouI2QFzqU93pHCJZKROrQItYnHEZaQUCSfnczs-jdv9XJum3s3WwEeMPqyjwLwVtg/s1600/whatever+floats+review+%25282sm%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw1u1p6ijkhzWVlcHL1yUMMWu_uNpOj5tYFdTBAyp68j93xl4abFYYykCX_LvHheRPcXdKJ_opfIouI2QFzqU93pHCJZKROrQItYnHEZaQUCSfnczs-jdv9XJum3s3WwEeMPqyjwLwVtg/s320/whatever+floats+review+%25282sm%2529.JPG" width="272" /></a></div>A great review by Lois Bellew of the Exhibition at the Slough Museum. Very special comments.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqWZzLDndugcoGM-UY2P85ChpE8KYN_bvKL_RvrhOiSMNeJVn9COK6yYyiYyB3XV0oC6ScrmwPi1b47nzZ6xaTFAvna8gjVr4VpJaNAbW8RqLV0W3De5gE7i286WxBuHAneIJVZ5hwPuU/s1600/whatever+floats+review+%25281sm%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqWZzLDndugcoGM-UY2P85ChpE8KYN_bvKL_RvrhOiSMNeJVn9COK6yYyiYyB3XV0oC6ScrmwPi1b47nzZ6xaTFAvna8gjVr4VpJaNAbW8RqLV0W3De5gE7i286WxBuHAneIJVZ5hwPuU/s320/whatever+floats+review+%25281sm%2529.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>That was a lovely surprise.<br />
<br />
Also, the dates for one of the next outings for the exhibition is at the end of the article. <br />
It will be at the National Needlework Archive, Old Textile Centre, Newbury, Berkshire 19 September to 26 October, 2012.<br />
<br />
We have also been asked for some of the pieces to go to Langley Academy which has connections with the Museum. The chosen pieces will go on display alongside the Museum Artefact which inspired it.<br />
<br />
AND...the newly opened Bracknell Gallery has asked us to show some of the work in their gallery space. We are in the process of working it out, but it will probably be 3 weeks from the last week in November this year - 2011.<br />
So, it goes on with a life of it's own!Sandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04978514536651961190noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-69562820303982795042011-08-05T13:36:00.000-07:002011-08-05T13:36:40.793-07:00Positive feedback ...Shortly after the exhibition came down, Annie Hamilton gave me her thoughts about the exhibition:<br />
<em>"... how very apt her [Heather Brand's] work was in the middle of the window at Slough museum - as a Slough resident I thought her piece [Follow the Sun] captured the essence of the place beautifully and I recognised the design straight away as I walk over the original each week! Also, to Mary [Parry], her quilt [Trading Estate] was much admired by myself and other residents with artistic bents as an excellent portrait of our trading eatate! Loved all the work in the show actually and am proud to be part of TVCQ."</em><br />
<br />
Then I was delighted to receive a thank you letter from Councillor Mrs. Gill Birch, Bracknell Town Mayor, who attended our Private View: <em>"<span style="font-size: 11pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 10.0pt;">I was delighted to meet you and see the lovely textile work your group has achieved, congratulations on being granted the Inspire Mark and I hope this brings more recognition to your group in future projects."</span></em><br />

The party was combined between celebrating ourselves and our work, and thanking the volunteers of the Museum and the work that they put in to the collections. It was very sad to think that the Museum was closing, but I think we gave it a fantastic send off. We look forward to hearing news of the reopening at Slough Library.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">It was a very appropriate finale. We had many lovely comments that the Museum volunteers liked the work on display because it was based on interpretations of Slough and the Museum - it was particularly relevant to them as people who live and/or work in Slough and they felt that we had really done the subject justice.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;">It was great to have a busy and lively event that was also recognised by the Mayor of Bracknell Town, Councillor Gill Birch. She had met our group during one of our meetings in the community centre in Bracknell and was really interested in what we were doing, so we were delighted to be able to show her the end result.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

Wow! What a variety in so many ways. There were big pieces, tiny pieces. Big 3-d and tiny 3-d. Lots of quilts and lots of other things. Colourful pieces and muted pieces. Etherial pieces and solid pieces. <br />
A huge range of techniques were on display - hand stitching, machine stitching, painting, printing, cyanotype, trapunto, applique, patchwork piecing goldwork,silk paper, and many more ... <br />
And the work represented a very wide range of inspirations too - from mammoths to power stations, and dolls shoes to comets. Pictures will follow in due course.Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15261957979103264887noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-89891153059195066272011-05-13T10:14:00.000-07:002011-05-13T10:14:02.134-07:00Doll Corset - Structure and baseBlogger has been down for a few days, so just a quick posting of covering the base of the structure <br />

and how it looks complete... At this point I hadn't sewn round the top to keep the dowels in, nor stitched the back opening closed. I am also gluing the dowels into the base.<br />

This is sort of a reference to the reed boning used in one of the doll's corsets from the SLough Museum. The dowels are sticking out at the bottom and are stuck into a large piece of upholstry foam.<br />
<br />
Here are views of how they will be stuck in. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQvMvtWtZeesY45xPigwNv-kimTCsovg7r3SF-yaq-OIwuOv8UhkUlMnXNzJqt4oB_M2GdtnMBa1xKcViF3CCkTnx05ekI7pvStA28i1LyQhsloxw1ZPusX-fNc95bmIwvav0A-kfCZcU/s1600/structure1sm.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="304" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQvMvtWtZeesY45xPigwNv-kimTCsovg7r3SF-yaq-OIwuOv8UhkUlMnXNzJqt4oB_M2GdtnMBa1xKcViF3CCkTnx05ekI7pvStA28i1LyQhsloxw1ZPusX-fNc95bmIwvav0A-kfCZcU/s320/structure1sm.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />

A few channels I had made a bit too narrow with the hand stitching, so I had to remove a bit of the stitch. So, I just have a few places where I need to go back in and sort it.<br />
<br />
One good reason for using photos for your work is that it helps you step back, so to speak. I had it arranged in what I thought was a good shape, but when I looked at the first photo, I realised I really wanted it straight in front. So, I will use a few kebab sticks to push it forward.<br />
More photos of the new arrangement.<br />

It has been enlightening to see what others have done and how their thoughts have developed.<br /><br />Secondly, it seems that most of us have been emancipated by not having to do something to go on the wall. In fact, it appears to have led to a surfeit of such work and a dearth of wall pieces. I am sure, however, that this will make it a more interesting exhibition.<br /><br />On a personal level, my decision, after much procrastination, has resulted in exploring new avenues and having to come up with new solutions to problems. The research element has been exciting and educative. I know a great deal more about Uranus, swans and book arts as result! A further plus is that my free machine embroidery skills have improved dramatically. (Well, in my opinion!)<br /><br />I am now infatuated with book arts, although I cannot get anywhere near the standard of MC. I have been amazed at the pieces created by artists in this field and the imagination of the work. Some of it is truly mind-boggling.<br /><br />I have various follow-ups planned but I say this every time I do a JQ! I am planning to combine an appropriate block with a similar subject along the lines of 'Storm at Sea' with the swan.<br /><br />Lastly, sincere thanks must go to the organisers for the work which they have put in. I hope that we can deliver an exhibition which does justice to their efforts.Jennyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13421443046825256097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-33875658081554161822011-05-10T09:42:00.000-07:002011-05-10T11:28:07.397-07:00Dream Shoes - Final DesignSo, on to the final piece. Having created the pattern I now designed the fabric, using the computer to print the details on the organza.<br />
<br />
The uppers of the shoes are covered with old-fashioned luggage labels, the soles feature an old picture of the world map - the left shoe focussing mainly on the western hemisphere and the right shoe on the eastern hemisphere. 'The world at her feet'<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5605133136048018050" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfd81acJnQ9DqrOGCU0kuhDPstAJm60oJEKzkipLFd-js8VkDiWRN4rdaput1HYCxw4qAcSQpQAhRv-oaWMYccPN-RBgHigjxhT5SDL4aYz1ybVF8EbfgFirt1xtYghhumegfWJauAvJe8/s320/DSC01286.JPG" style="display: block; height: 222px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 266px;" /><br />
<br />
I used tiny machine stitches to stabilise the fabric with 1/4" seams between the upper and the sole, but deliberately did not seam the other edges so that over time these would fray and disperse. The stay stitching created a neat line for the hem and I sewed the upper to the sole by hand using smoky invisible thread.<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5605133366490299458" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhb4M8yzQaakpgn5cfrN_HtRfui9-QVZYz9_I-5p_XjZ1awOElhCKr1X9R2OfcTj4R6t8ZGyBOy-sJB1yz6boBEQ02TmtryUynpVd1Pb11n9kFUNQ87aOL7DKo3787Pi84KSW-My2zadeQ8/s320/DSC01288.JPG" style="display: block; height: 254px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 308px;" /><br />
<br />

<br />
The shoe bars are also not finished, but cut on the bias to prevent too much fraying.<br />

The bars are secured with beads, used to look like map pins.<br />

I am continuing the heraldic theme concentrating on the swan which features in both the old and new coat of arms for Slough.<br />
<br />
I thought that a background based on the 'Storm at Sea' patchwork block linked well with water. This was constructed from separate disperse dye painted papers printed onto polycotton. Accidentally, a piece of painted Lutradur fell on top and it seemed to integrate the design. Where would we be without serendipity? Unfortunately, I did not have enough so several attempts were made to reproduce it. Oh course, that never works! I settled in the end for the third attempt.<br />
<br />
The swan was inspired by a design from Indian folk and was constructed from painted Lutradur bondawebbed onto the background and free machine embroidered. The background was also enhanced with embroidery and a scallop design for water.<br />

This was actually one experiment which worked first time! I made black and white copies of various dianthus and painted them onto cotton, backed it with felt and free machine embroidered the flowers. A diamond arrangement looked better that a square so I decided on this and finished it with crochet cords. The whole cover was edged with buttonhole stitch.<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604330051926394114" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4W87TG9KtrPHww9-cYE0EfHBTXnVv3_Tm60GCAAM703nkdN2-fD9VrX805TDbC0D-PpSY0Jz_cx-l-zocpeo0p5lpol3vfC0lysHtWqTNgNZpOZShgBZ6og70mcsb9WENe7oMNZeytr0E/s320/IMG_4577.JPG" style="display: block; height: 240px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 320px;" /><br />

I needed to marry the two parts of the work - swan and dianthus, so I painted some card and used this as a background. The swan is intended to stand proud of the cover. I designed a title label which had to go on the back - a new fashion! Nearly there.<br />
<div>My last problem was the side panels for the swan design. I thoughts of swan facts from a Mediaeval bestiary and quotes from poems but decided that these would be too intrusive. I was playing with my Storm at Sea block one evening when the solution presented itself and I came up with subtly coloured variations on the block with a wavy background which, I hope, complements the main swan design. <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5604327178959405522" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZzooJg_fFqVVhggPwbO1iZ647HC21wJYcWWGpG2tOHQvMWhk7BBceLXkAEM8kkEolkrL_rOVTL-v4IY8XhTABjOUC2YCemHiRklhv8-ZxHMyzMmWCIz4g9O60EGeAssvtAxW8f-mAD24W/s320/Panel.jpg" style="display: block; height: 320px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 160px;" /></div><br />

<br />
Once I'd decided to use a duster inside the <strong>POLISH</strong> tin the rest followed easily. Various ways to get the text onto it were considered and sampled but the automated machine embroidery gave clarity plus a degree of gravitas that seemed fitting for ministerial pronouncements. Thread colour echoes the duster edging. I'll probably impregnate it with some polish to add smell if I can find any at the back of the cupboard.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCsC7p7PUgZKztDgokRW_xvAeTBG7FRVkiPwhTlLFdp-E0Xk56w1T8r0MwutpitZg1YV3AbzgjM2mOXfhX0J2eQzZRIl-PGUWumg-b7iSB3JyI-JbIctyzURvF7NbDzhIetFaZt-gyFlku/s1600/duster+sample.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603563521405709842" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCsC7p7PUgZKztDgokRW_xvAeTBG7FRVkiPwhTlLFdp-E0Xk56w1T8r0MwutpitZg1YV3AbzgjM2mOXfhX0J2eQzZRIl-PGUWumg-b7iSB3JyI-JbIctyzURvF7NbDzhIetFaZt-gyFlku/s200/duster+sample.JPG" style="float: left; height: 101px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 156px;" /></a><br />
Sampling: machine embroidery<br />
<br />
<div>I've chosen to use an assortment of plasters and fonts in the <strong>AID</strong> tin to suggest an uncoordinated approach. I quite like the amateurish look of the texts on these. To start with I wasn't sure stitching over the lettering would add anything but now 'stitching things together' is in my mind and the idea that a lot of effort doesn't always achieve anything useful. Mainly, I hope it will add in a suggestion of the feelings of care, comfort and nurture that trigger donations to emergency aid. So it has to be hand stitched. Also it might help tick the 'textile' box which I was beginning to worry was not obvious enough!</div><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSrLGCwnAXxhkI8XVLblYevnux35d1xxOahoAs3fl7WbPpInPg3XlUtnhphmf4VjZMX42JfltSELiNUuwwEpY8VvfYgOJ-v4d2YkSKQFe6MSKwfiBEMN-C1acdj91IisoQWz3jvAChXhqh/s1600/plaster+sample.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603565781067483186" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSrLGCwnAXxhkI8XVLblYevnux35d1xxOahoAs3fl7WbPpInPg3XlUtnhphmf4VjZMX42JfltSELiNUuwwEpY8VvfYgOJ-v4d2YkSKQFe6MSKwfiBEMN-C1acdj91IisoQWz3jvAChXhqh/s200/plaster+sample.JPG" style="float: right; height: 165px; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; width: 200px;" /></a> Two strands or three? Sampling stitching on plasters was a real pain because the glue gums up needle and thread. A baby wipe helps but stopping every other stitch or so to deal with it breaks the sewing rhythm. Will I have the stamina to stitch them all?<br />
<br />
<div><strong>UNIVERSAL SALVE</strong> is the most difficult piece to make decisions on. The original plan was to include a zig-zag book of circles to emulate the fold-out directions found on some products. I like the sculptural look of these - a bit like a slinky.<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603566759532744466" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKc399HVbzJCLY7-ou4pYkQW93mfcckXh5Cg7q1ENPIFNHaieCo63LNcsN2kKvsC7GscyeV4t36lKeM9yxWTElmztYwdFs2UMOiFteAOfXb-nQ6_IYpLHH5pP6Dax04Wok7GRZBh4XWTR6/s200/Universal+Salve.JPG" style="display: block; height: 81px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 200px;" /></div><div>Paper seems too flimsy to stay standing up; card is not easy to fold neatly. This structure might be hard to read when displayed.</div><div>Using ribbon to string the circles together is a possibility as is this interesting arrangement in the Schraubthaler or Coin Book:</div><br />
<div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5603570374288946402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwxJy5rzQ-_-_J1tZmnQeFgmM3zsO3SfTMN0qIYvCGj0XWIS3Nbj_Joc-r6HOZTOvUqE78JtIK0WlNBFU5Y9Q2DFGNCjh1q3qT2N9lJZqigJKpe25VE5vdJtHP2IsI5M_iVf7esvm_61lN/s200/Coin+Book.JPG" style="display: block; height: 150px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 200px;" /></div><br />
Although I'd lose the 'slinky' structure, this sort of book would be easy to open out for display and facilitate reading. Ribbon spacing would need to accommodate thickness of one or more pages.<br />
<div>I'm currently thinking of printing the text onto fabric, stiffening with Lutradur and joining discs with ribbon. Will it attach to the tin (Velcro?) or be free standing? Will I include images? The order in which the 'pages' open might determine placement of text. Will it be double sided? Is there a simpler solution?<br />
</div><div>Now wishing I'd started sooner!</div>Roshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05020092211017257605noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-38256652620604083892011-04-28T04:09:00.000-07:002011-04-28T10:52:12.751-07:003 Tins - part 2MAKING THE WORK<br />
<div>I had intended to create containers to mimic/echo the tins. Lutradur or pelmet vilene could have created the necessary stiffness. The more I thought about it the less enthusiasm I had for this approach because I felt it would not add anything to the ideas in the work. I wanted something to look old like the pieces in the museum, but to have more unexpected contents relating to modern times.</div><div>So I looked for some ready-made tins I could adapt and scavenged these:<br />

<br />
Finally I painted with acrylics and a layer of matt medium to seal. Labels were created in PaintshopPro, printed on paper, sealed with matt medium and stuck to the tins with transfer adhesive.<br />

<br />
That’s the containers done. Needless to say none of this was as easy as it appears when I summarise it! <br />
<br />
Next up the contents. This is taking a while to get right but here are a few scribbles from my sketch book to show how messily I work and how verbal my approach is! I really admire the sketchbooks some artists create so beautifully. Masterpieces in their own right. Guess I’m a back-of-an-n-v-lope person. <br />

But now that the deadline is nearing, I just decided to get a start and see what happens.<br />
<br />
One of the problems was that I had sprayed walnut ink on the lutrador base I was using. I thought it would give it a more aged look. then I left it to dry. I blotted the excess with a piece of white muslin. But, even after some weeks, it hadn't actually dried. If you touched it, it rubbed off on your hands. <br />
<br />
So, I gave up eventually and ran it through a rinse in the washing machine. (I wasn't sure what even a quick wash would do to the lutrador.<br />
here it is laying in the tree to photograph because I didn't want it to get on anything else in the house!)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8TDisN8CJmDKua-eeJrGxr4Qu5iSzxPfb4_y85m1XamLa0R28qN1ixD9hFFhkOZyqNY_Sk6YxOUAlt2RQswI1h7mwZYCzw3B7S-djiozrpUpQt6xffWETw1uuE85IDGr_9T0208AgsM/s1600/large+corsetsm.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="113" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEid8TDisN8CJmDKua-eeJrGxr4Qu5iSzxPfb4_y85m1XamLa0R28qN1ixD9hFFhkOZyqNY_Sk6YxOUAlt2RQswI1h7mwZYCzw3B7S-djiozrpUpQt6xffWETw1uuE85IDGr_9T0208AgsM/s320/large+corsetsm.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The plus side of washing it was that it was at least more of an off white than a pure white, which suited me better. The white muslin was still stained after the rinse, too. It basically looked dirty not aged.<br />
<br />
So, that was where I left it for sometime. Although I had ordered a range of natural/skin coloured viscose rayon embroidery threads.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvw62v2AGfSeUfY-1x7IJnTtuNpqrHglaloNR86aFx2Tq5q66eJJrRofVnjU0074qa2o7q022_IOk2cLl5aFerVLuUvtedUxC3U3TvCZXWJ3liU6wYdpGOqt9J9_G4LBnpNH102PoXUuo/s1600/doll+corset+stitching+thread.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvw62v2AGfSeUfY-1x7IJnTtuNpqrHglaloNR86aFx2Tq5q66eJJrRofVnjU0074qa2o7q022_IOk2cLl5aFerVLuUvtedUxC3U3TvCZXWJ3liU6wYdpGOqt9J9_G4LBnpNH102PoXUuo/s320/doll+corset+stitching+thread.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br />
At last I thought I better get on with it. I had meant to use white muslin to stitch through, but now hadn't enough of it. I did have enough cream muslin and found that would suit. And having decided that, I proceeded to tear strips and make patches to cover the lutrador. The lutrador could just be more like a support for the inside. It is still more of a fragile feel than interfacing would have been used in the same way. I also realised the stained white muslin wasn't as bad as I thought and would make a good backing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfWWkMWzl9-z7osW9LD5_8CBKmllai47LItcnkIHuZb2-CVJlEFwDD1GuO3KvjTClR9CbgiE3FbPcSuQYAfhgONS396qchDtdQEc6kNXBKj8HjDRJFasK__nzrPxmYdmons19FR9FqyiY/s1600/doll+corset+muslinsm.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfWWkMWzl9-z7osW9LD5_8CBKmllai47LItcnkIHuZb2-CVJlEFwDD1GuO3KvjTClR9CbgiE3FbPcSuQYAfhgONS396qchDtdQEc6kNXBKj8HjDRJFasK__nzrPxmYdmons19FR9FqyiY/s320/doll+corset+muslinsm.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPNf9p06-GJMy-42fHAxbFxoLWIjBmUEkPzS0Ev4lXGvUTb1wfCV36uL8eXtEWNMwK__KEaShoXOhoG8Vhf5zExMRd-8ka83o_c7EzoOnk73wEFoxfWoTQkzPuVswBil278HJltzoe47o/s1600/doll+corset+muslin+layersm.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="202" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPNf9p06-GJMy-42fHAxbFxoLWIjBmUEkPzS0Ev4lXGvUTb1wfCV36uL8eXtEWNMwK__KEaShoXOhoG8Vhf5zExMRd-8ka83o_c7EzoOnk73wEFoxfWoTQkzPuVswBil278HJltzoe47o/s320/doll+corset+muslin+layersm.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And so now I am listening to audio books and doing the stitching. I like the raw edges of the patches peeking through the stitching. I may still add some frayed strips like I did with my sample, but I will see what it looks like when it is all stitched.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCc2zHV7B7UnwK58tuMYZ5hIGhHfONWxR2o00o1glsmnGyMr2wEZp3Owlk-vU1Z-DtQ3N18qurvj02leUci4Jif9WSO27HMSPH1UYmvmX-SIwDHiMlELZFaxRWp4T9TIQH_eu17wD0dbA/s1600/doll+corset+stitching1sm.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="257" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCc2zHV7B7UnwK58tuMYZ5hIGhHfONWxR2o00o1glsmnGyMr2wEZp3Owlk-vU1Z-DtQ3N18qurvj02leUci4Jif9WSO27HMSPH1UYmvmX-SIwDHiMlELZFaxRWp4T9TIQH_eu17wD0dbA/s320/doll+corset+stitching1sm.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I had thought to use sticks through the 'boning' channels to make it into a 3D piece, but since there is already alot of 3D work being done, I may go ahead and make it to hang on the wall. I will see what it looks like.Sandyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04978514536651961190noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-39935896048059748952011-04-25T04:48:00.000-07:002011-04-28T04:29:13.930-07:003 TinsINSPIRATION AND CONCEPT<br />
<br />
<div>In the boxed collections a tin of <strong>Mentholum</strong> appealed. This healing cream could be used for all sorts of ailments. The reverse of the tin reads: DIRECTIONS APPLY TO THE PARTS AFFECTED. (Sorry about the out-of-focus photo.)<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFpQsmw-zZV4z8txVDupx_kN0c938HjtcpjEk9UsuylCjzYe9p9OIhpQdwdQJHwp7meCIaK-fTom-eLzKqzwDqxfyGul36A9bhQIDqRxVE2y34s6xAXAa6ErLPhLo8J2Wxe11f0lOMQ3_G/s1600/Mentholatum.jpg"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599490881623725890" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFpQsmw-zZV4z8txVDupx_kN0c938HjtcpjEk9UsuylCjzYe9p9OIhpQdwdQJHwp7meCIaK-fTom-eLzKqzwDqxfyGul36A9bhQIDqRxVE2y34s6xAXAa6ErLPhLo8J2Wxe11f0lOMQ3_G/s200/Mentholatum.jpg" style="cursor: hand; float: left; height: 182px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 182px;" /></a>I like the idea of a cure-all. It's an understandable human desire despite the scepticism it can arouse. Thinking of conditions it might treat, words such as 'cuts', 'strains', and 'bruising' reminded me of the current economic climate. Mentholatum was manufactured in Slough 1900-1940s, a period that also included hard times.</div><br />
<br />
<div>From these associations came my idea for a <strong><em>UNIVERSAL SALVE </em></strong>which could treat the painful consequences of our current situation and government policies.</div><br />
<div>Also in the boxes was a Band Aid tin which had cost 2 shillings. This linked to the Mentholatum in being used to treat the body too and manufactured in Slough during the 1920-1940s. Thinking of the body as a metaphor for the world I could imagine the plasters patching up the evils released from Pandora's Box. Suffering is brought to our attention daily via the media. We want to respond but are often helpless when faced with the enormity of the problems.</div><br />
<br />
<div><strong><em>AID</em></strong> will be my resonse to these thoughts and maybe question whether aid is the most effective means of addressing poverty, conflict and vulnerability.<br />
<br />
Tins must be chiming with me because I also liked the one from the <strong>Cedar Mop Company</strong> holding a mop head. The smell of polish was evocative of my childhood.<br />

<div>(Does anyone polish these days?)</div><br />
<div>The accompanying polish was a bright orange concoction in a bottle. </div><div><br />
Manufactured around the same time as the Band Aid tin, it claimed to clean and polish just about every surface - floors, cars and furniture. Another all-purpose product! It made me think of superficial shine, making something look more attractive, covering up the unappealing.<br />
<br />
<strong><em>POLISH</em></strong> will focus on political spin. </div><br />

<div><br />
<div><br />
<div>So having established what the finished item would be I decided to make the shoes from organza, a fabric as ethereal as a dream. First I need to create the pattern and so I used calico and a polystyrene mould used in feltmaking.</div><br />
<br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598850663887680674" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjS71ZYiY5VSFxlqHci57BcFpUg-ehBWdXE1pnKYYD55Vu6Y0tNYp255jBDLE1TMG1QZoO_If_Y81DJa-UqEQxkoQUecOxmJlxGhs2WSWLkkSwHDTyC36v_r9wjNzUh-5lNbVMQR1xQ-km3/s320/DSC01279.JPG" style="cursor: hand; display: block; height: 174px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 225px;" /><br />
<br />
<br />
<div><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598850319783417026" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG3reWeTKvmOcHIGsDjxDF-NXZQM7qQSj-nAQMtOLqLqHa9usbQAAfoWSb9iKiiafTgv0QwCfjPR7DC73lTr8yUE_RVr4Cwy9e30QudQdPBS4cjeGE4OzHAiT4D4MmyY9pBuxNjgaysxVB/s320/DSC01278.JPG" style="cursor: hand; display: block; height: 179px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 221px;" /></div></div></div></div><br />
<br />
<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5598850471389434530" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLn0kedByV8fCdHm3uD1pTpUcC4NSFuNMO3-9jyTQp_haWIt8m3Cft_w7zkbwjydsNbpExFjXgrLIVKkvQ2SzzlWs3BloV0wf3OL0YOXgOGdvSo-TX96s-H67TKmO9gEVj9sNZWhiTn_-D/s320/DSC01279.JPG" style="cursor: hand; display: block; height: 155px; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; width: 218px;" /><br />
<br />
Having pinned the pieces together I stitched the sole to the upper while it was in place on the mould .<br />

<br />
The next stage will be to print the fabric and use the calico pattern to make a pair of shoes in organza.Ceedayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13481501766320886535noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-14973919228663870092011-04-19T09:37:00.000-07:002011-05-10T07:01:40.983-07:00Working on the actual item.Having decided what I wanted to do and having done some stitched samples it was time to begin the actual item for display - always a difficult moment; there's that prestine piece of fabric looking so lovely! I decided that I'd sketch it out on the actual fabric using a soft pencil and a light box to trace off the design. Then followed many, many hours of hand stitching; starting with using applique to attach different coloured pieces of fabric.<br /><br /><br />Here are photos of the different areas that are worked in different ways:<br /><br />Foiled fabric applied in a rouched manner;<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMYOvwwN6XzDOcfQhRjuohkI39tV8quyjf7vuDhBKVunDZahUJUkFxdlp894WUXnu1EW0HWpK0d6Vwf4KfAtqHQXUvYJbvjZ9KKDI2jsp7mltWqSgSDsTMWbbbiqpwz8haPm7f8_TKjZk/s1600/foiled+fabric.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 234px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597340929052961794" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMYOvwwN6XzDOcfQhRjuohkI39tV8quyjf7vuDhBKVunDZahUJUkFxdlp894WUXnu1EW0HWpK0d6Vwf4KfAtqHQXUvYJbvjZ9KKDI2jsp7mltWqSgSDsTMWbbbiqpwz8haPm7f8_TKjZk/s320/foiled+fabric.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpOe-yg9lvwAbZpKrN8MZCveB7tadVMDR7tHrNSK5DAVJz1zv2tuv4zC0khY_ptw9uFWzly_1e_jRhCnd0WDeGV097KFmUrKlinQO4ZVd03v-1lQ9_PoCO45cwp4xuG2aeL8HQS1L7HlQ/s1600/couching+over+string.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 158px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597341289517662098" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpOe-yg9lvwAbZpKrN8MZCveB7tadVMDR7tHrNSK5DAVJz1zv2tuv4zC0khY_ptw9uFWzly_1e_jRhCnd0WDeGV097KFmUrKlinQO4ZVd03v-1lQ9_PoCO45cwp4xuG2aeL8HQS1L7HlQ/s320/couching+over+string.jpg" /></a><br /><br />Gold fingering thread couched over string;<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1qbmI6cOwDWGP66a9t6yF8DRnro6p64jcMMrBSWEGSqSouqnFPWPtJb-FBgAdKe3l8XKeeeSTMELIbc-zdYeWY6Q23Ck8B1TgkyTsUDtSTDTgS4TPxLBTOtz6p-dGBKABqUH3c0mKDk8/s1600/christmas+coin+foil.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 319px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597342953826669874" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg1qbmI6cOwDWGP66a9t6yF8DRnro6p64jcMMrBSWEGSqSouqnFPWPtJb-FBgAdKe3l8XKeeeSTMELIbc-zdYeWY6Q23Ck8B1TgkyTsUDtSTDTgS4TPxLBTOtz6p-dGBKABqUH3c0mKDk8/s320/christmas+coin+foil.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br />Piece of gold foil from a christmas chocolate coin, embossed on a stamp;<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTpKn5PkYlTjjBzElQDvDh7tWaWxz0g0405Z_gw2UPmAlF9q4b3AFqbKEGAI4yuoVtJJyaV0fvQVtUn5Bq1raWlfp9sRwUozE1l7KjM_8ZYxLLUwwF_M0K8gKxBNedrQeSGZhzFAPdZ20/s1600/couched+jap.jpg"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 141px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 320px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5597341191825939202" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTpKn5PkYlTjjBzElQDvDh7tWaWxz0g0405Z_gw2UPmAlF9q4b3AFqbKEGAI4yuoVtJJyaV0fvQVtUn5Bq1raWlfp9sRwUozE1l7KjM_8ZYxLLUwwF_M0K8gKxBNedrQeSGZhzFAPdZ20/s320/couched+jap.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br />Gold Jap couched over fabric;Clarewillsewhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00826895916725505066noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3054721748784788744.post-24827371450988060452011-04-16T08:43:00.000-07:002011-04-16T08:43:25.391-07:00Victorian flat irons - continuedI decided I wanted to make a number of quite realistic ‘portraits’ of the irons, picking the ones I liked best from my photos, from a couple of different angles. I wanted to paint or draw them. The drawings would be slightly larger than life.<br />
<br />
But the first question was, what sort of background to show them on? My feelings for the old houses I remembered made me think of old distempered walls, faded, peeling, overpainted and so on. <br />
<br />
So I took some quite coarsely woven white cotton duck, cut it into roughly A4 sizes and painted these pieces in various creams and greys, overpainting until I got a faded, peeling look. I liked these pieces a lot.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWEEiE6_akS3q_wnBc9yrxQbde1i_gh-sIsPiUcjkJwPt_2-EjH8GzPFGTPZEdP8xkJ36xoSJPbMDSUSy4Wa_7636XNYLlHm9T46kLTd8F5lC9viW_bc-dnng3BpD5pjNDSSp5ymsGSq-b/s1600/christine+backgroundsm.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWEEiE6_akS3q_wnBc9yrxQbde1i_gh-sIsPiUcjkJwPt_2-EjH8GzPFGTPZEdP8xkJ36xoSJPbMDSUSy4Wa_7636XNYLlHm9T46kLTd8F5lC9viW_bc-dnng3BpD5pjNDSSp5ymsGSq-b/s320/christine+backgroundsm.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
After I painted about 20 pieces of background fabric, I started sketching the irons I liked. I made simple outline drawings from my photographs, large enough to fit nicely on to A4 sized pieces of cloth. The first picture shows 2 of my drawings.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6IcKRq5Q-4LB2h9603yMaAe5p6zZwzGbbQ3HqEkwFLp2uBaf_rvfNG5gNDe_QQFYl9Ha5cTVaSZWgccTW1AcJZzER-uwjgO9uD8_BuAib7fd0v7A5r4zCLD_b9uRu3n2AvATSKDZKfrWW/s1600/christine+drawing+sm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6IcKRq5Q-4LB2h9603yMaAe5p6zZwzGbbQ3HqEkwFLp2uBaf_rvfNG5gNDe_QQFYl9Ha5cTVaSZWgccTW1AcJZzER-uwjgO9uD8_BuAib7fd0v7A5r4zCLD_b9uRu3n2AvATSKDZKfrWW/s320/christine+drawing+sm.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br />
<br />
This took me quite a time, and I finally made 8 drawings that I thought were good enough.<br />
<br />
By then transferring these on to tracing paper, I could use them the right way round, or in reverse - which gave me lots more images. You can see my black-pencilled, reversible tracing in the second picture.<br />
